The title is based on the expression/song line, "Be it ever so humble there is no place like home."
Lynn Griffin and Jerry Madden brought Hub Braden onto the show's production staff as a set decorator. Normally, the studio property department would provide a decorator when required for a new swing set. Madden would give Braden a call to attend a Monday morning production meeting, attended by the director, (producers) Madelyn Davies and Bob Carroll, Jr., the property master, Lynn Griffith (art director), and Jerry Madden. The new swing set was under construction on stage. After the meeting, Braden would select and tag furniture in the property warehouse; order drapery and window treatments. The following day, after the set had been painted, the prop master and decorator swing gang crew would dress the set. The cast and director would perform a rehearsal walk-through that afternoon. Only on complicated new swing set construction would the decorator's job call last an additional day or for a full week.
As the series developed, the producing team expanded the story line to move the featured cast into their own home environments, away from the main diner set. The scenario featured Mel at his apartment. The set featured a nautical theme since Mel had been in the Navy. His closet was crammed full of junk, which fell out of the closet shell after the closet door was opened. An eyebrow shelf around the top of the set was decorated with souvenirs collected during his Navy service. When Flo's set was introduced, she was living in an extended home-trailer. This trailer was a rental, from a Valley Trailer Sales and rental company, specifically used for film and television filming with one side cutaway over the kitchen sink area to the front booth end. In discussion about how Flo would decorate, the art director and decorator agreed with Polly Holiday, that the trailer should look like the main train car set from Bob Conrad's TV series "Wild, Wild, West". Tassel fringed green velor swags and jabot draped the window seat area, continuing into the rear bedroom. In the bedroom, a ceiling mirror was installed over the bed area. Girlie nick-knacks decorated the shelving. On the day of the show, the producers decided to alter the set's decoration. Upon learning of their plans, Polly walked off the stage. After an hour of discussion and delay of taping, the producers left the set as it stood, and Polly returned to perform her scenes.
