Airwolf - Short Walk to Freedom
Scarecrow-883 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Caitlin accompanies some kids and their teacher on what is supposed to be an archeological study of ruins in Mexico but Colonel Arturo Alzar (John Aniston, Jennifer's pops) and his minor army (funded by deep pockets in his country, giving him confidence and courage he might not already have had) kidnap them. String had reluctantly left them behind with a guide, Miguel (Ricardo Lopez), but Ozzie (Brian Farrell), the teacher, has negotiated an air drug trafficking operation through the use of archeological visits in planes that Colonel Alzar considers loathsome. String and Santini bring in the Airwolf which is damaged by a missile launcher during a rescue mission, leaving a netted basket for the students, Caitlin, and Ozzie to escape in. It doesn't go according to plan, as the Airwolf must land, String and Ozzie fall from the net basket because of the weight problem (captured by Alzar as a result), Santini's back is out, the desert is not a particularly ideal landing spot when there is limited water and no food, and Alzar's men are often driving up in their jeeps with machine guns causing mischief. There is plenty here to keep the pace moving at complete locomotive, giving Caitlin character moments with the kids who are obviously scared but intently listen to her in order to survive while Santini barks orders so that the Airwolf can be carried (pushed at first, but later assisted by a jeep commandeered through a clever ruse that some of Alzar's men fall for) to a safe spot for repairs. Have no fear as String eventually escapes from Alzar's camp when Ozzie goes on a machine gun rampage after being told he wasn't even man enough to be executed! Escaping from an abandoned town (turned army camp) is String's forte; however, this is getting more than a bit repetitive. String has the tendency to find himself captured and held in abandoned towns and camps, whether in the desert or jungle. He always gets out, though. Sure enough, String makes it back to Santini (of course!) and the Airwolf in back in the air taking out Alzar's army and warships in the sky. One of the kids flirts with Caitlin in a rather cheesy dialogue scene when talking about fear of dying. Aniston embodies the optimistic idealist who sees himself in a greater military role than when the episode introduces him, cooped away with his men at a sweaty, decaying ghost town...this town looks almost exactly like the one in "Prisoner of Yesterday". I think this will be a favorite among Airwolf fans due to the use of the supercopter in the episode. Lots of threats towards soldiers in jeeps through gun-to-ground fire and the fly in on the camp included with the climax puts the Airwolf to work. Not the most significant way to end the second season but this has been a Jekyll & Hyde affair for 22 episodes.
