Not among the director's finest work...
"Zigoto's Outing With Friends" is a rather lame short comedy. Aside from seeing a very early car, I can't think of a lot to recommend this one.
The short by Jean Durand begins with his frequent character, Zigoto (Lucien Bataille) reading a boring book. So, instead he goes on an outing in his new car with his friends. The captioning says it's a new '101 horsepower car'--this, during an age when the horsepower of cars actually was between 4-30 horsepower! So, in other words, it's supposed to be a super-fast car.
When the car starts, Zigoto isn't paying attention and a young lady, Berthe Dagmar (the director's wife) zips away in the car. The 'out of control' car goes on a rather low speed chase about town and smashes into lots of stuff (a trademark of this director's films). However, due to poor editing, it often appeared as if the car stops--then, magically, in the next scene it's clear to the rubble and running wildly again. There's really nothing that funny about any of this, though I am pretty sure folks back in 1912 laughed at the madness. To me, it just doesn't appear to have aged well and was not a particularly good Durand film.
