- Refusing to marry the woman of his father's choice, Rene, son of the Marquis de Viller, is disinherited and goes to the United States to begin life anew as a plain American citizen. He never attempts to make a living and soon becomes stranded. In a newspaper he reads an advertisement calling for a competent valet. He knows the duties of a valet and applies to a banker for the position. The banker has just had a portrait painted by a female artist. During his sittings he makes overtures to her and is scornfully rejected. Thus, when Rene applies for the position of valet, the banker conceives a plan of revenge against the artist. He offers Rene $1,000 and a position if he will pose as a nobleman and wed the artist. Rene visits her and falls in love at first sight; he returns to the banker and accepts his proposition. Rene wins the artist's hand in marriage. After the wedding, the vindictive banker announces to the girl, "You have married my valet!" However, the banker's eyes are opened when the French consul steps forward with a letter announcing that Rene has been reinstated as the heir of the Marquis de Viller.—Moving Picture World synopsis
