KUTOB (2005) is another Pinoy thriller, topbilled by Rica Peralejo, Alessandra de Rossi, Marvin Agustin and Ryan Agoncillo. Though Jose Javier Reyes is one of my favorite Filipino filmmakers, KUTOB is just derivative, with tired performances from the otherwise usually energetic cast. Agustin struggles with his psycho role, and Peralejo whines and gripes and mopes throughout the film. The theme of unrequited love should have been easy material for a veteran like Reyes, but halfway through the film you know how it's going to end, and you don't care. Giving a little boost to the entire proceedings is Agoncillo as Rica's boyfriend, de Rossi as the prerequisite-best-friend-who-gets-killed, the not-yet-a-superstar Eugene Domingo as a saddened aunt (to Marvin), and a properly menacing performance from Ms Liza Lorena as Marvin's equally psycho, dominatrix mother. Lito Mempin's cinematography and Jaime Fabregas' eerie music add enhance this horror film but on the whole, this is just another Pinoy chiller perfect for going to sleep.
