If you grew up in Los Angeles in the 50s or early 60s you knew Engineer Bill
wlb22 August 2008
I remember at the ripe old age of 6 at Dixie Canyon school in Sherman Oaks(1956) my classmates all excitedly told me that MY name was picked out of the mail bag as a future guest. The previous evening was the one of the few times I didn't watch it.

You had to build a little model train car to run on the track - I can remember meeting Bill at the CBS studio with a model box car (Soo Line) with my father - what a kind man - Funny of all my childhood memories appearing with Engineer Bill on Los Angeles TV stood out in my memories.

Hearing that he died this month at the age of 97 jogged some pleasant memories.

I would have to remember him as a kind man...

I was there

I was a guest on what I knew it as "The Engineer Bill Show" at the old KHJ-TV Studios on Melrose in Hollywood in the early 60's. I was maybe 6 years old at the time and I barely remember anything. However one thing stands out dramatically. I was used to watching the show on our old black & white television and when I got on the set, everything was in color. It was like stepping into Oz. I also remember getting lots of toys and candy. The episode I was on was also the last show before they changed the format. They changed it from a modern style set and opening to a more older type steam engine and western theme. I wish we had VCR's back then to see the show again.
