This story hinges on the ancient right of a guest to protection in the house of his host or hostess if the guest be unwelcome. In this instance, Isabeau's only son had been killed in a duel, and the victor, pursued by Isabeau's henchmen, seeks refuge in flight and finds himself in the presence of Isabeau herself in the castle. She hides him and while he is hiding she learns that the man's victim is her son. Torn between conflicting emotions she finally decides not to violate the right of asylum and thus saves his life.
