Celebrated pre WW2 Shanghai drama.

This appears to be the film known as ORPHAN ISLAND PARADISE and on the disc itself as An ISOLATED HEAVEN. The playing is broad and the settings studio-fied. However it does have an energy which adds to the historical background to make it intriguing.

In a run down Shanghai neighbourhood we find rebellious news boys, discontented market traders, a militant getting around looking like the phantom in MIDNIGHT SONGS, the businessman's mistress trying on wedding dresses and Lili doing the odd song.

Things come to an action climax, with the good guys entering the cabaret in finger masks and shooting the treacherous bad hats given to torturing locals.

The Zhong Guo Zao Qi Jing Diang Diang Ying DVD is particularly ratty. To their usual murky quality, suspect screen shape and illiterate English titles, add what appears to be black nitrate decomposition and the reels being in the wrong order.
