- One of a number of Soviet attempts to do a "western" in a Russian setting. During the Civil War (1918-20) between the Red Army and the White Army, just after the Communist Revolution, the Red Cavalry (the "good guys") are being victimized by rustlers stealing their horses. The hero devises a ruse in hopes of tricking the "bad guys" (the rustlers) and recovering the stolen herd.—Prof Steven P Hill, University of Illinois.
- Buryatia. 1918. A horse squadron heads for Kiahta to help his comrades a battle with the White Army is presumed to take place there. The detachment settles to spend the night. Under cover of night horse-thieves sneak up to their horses and try to steal them. But the place for stealing turns out to be unhappy and 300 horses perish in a chasm. A detachment deputy commander Abdai (B.Halzanov) recognizes his compatriot and realizes whom the horses were attempted to be stolen for a local money-bag Gamza, whom he used to serve as a horse-herd. Then Abdai suggests a plan, how to get new horses for a detachment. To realize that he should, pretending to be a local merchant, show up in his native village and try to drive off the horses from Gamza. The plan is risky, but there is no other way out, and the commander agrees.
