- Avia Richards wages a one-woman war against the evil demons hidden amongst us waiting to kill the next person they see. Armed only with a Samurai sword she boldly hunts them down putting her life on the line in a do or die battle, but it may be her own personal demons that may do her in.—Anonymous
- As Detectives Guy [Rodney 'Kamal' Jackson] and Nash [Cliff Lee] are on the scene of the third homicide in nine months in which the victim is mutilated and drained of blood, they are joined by Avia Richards [Allison Valentino], who flashes classified military credentials and says that she's been assigned to join the investigation. Against their better judgement, they take Avia with them when they shake down their #1 suspect, Bennet Salvatore [Oscar Segal]. Without a warrant, they enter the unlocked house, draw their guns, and corner sword-carrying Bennet in the attic. Suddenly, they are attacked by a vampire. Fortunately, Avia is there with her sword. She slugs Bennet and impales the vampire. OK, so now Guy and Nash are impressed, but Avia is disappointed. "It's not him," she moans.
Later, Detective Guy drops Avia at her home, where she finally explains herself [think: Quint's Indianapolis speech from "Jaws"]. "A few years ago, we took one of those family vacations in the Poconos..." she begins. To make a long story short, her family was attacked by a vampire. She alone was spared, thanks to her mother's intervention. But her 2-year old baby Jenine was killed, and the rest of her family--mother, father, and brother--were gone. They're out there somewhere, she believes, "living" as vampires.
The next night, Avia and Detective Guy have dinner together. He confesses that he pulled Avia's record and found that she's not listed as military, although her badge is active. Avia admits that her credentials and support come from families of vampires' victims as well as from persons high up in Congress and the military, although she is not "military" herself. That's enough for Detective Raymond Guy. He jumps into bed with Avia. Ray basically moves in with Avia, and the next half hour of the movie is just scene after scene spanning weeks of Avia searching for vampires in the park, sword twirling, polishing her sword with a pine-based solution (pine will set off an allergic reaction in a vampire, she explains), sleeping, having bad dreams about vampires, popping pills whenever she gets upset, sparring with Ray, having dinner with Ray, educating Ray about vampires, and identifying vampire "hot spots" on her map. One of the hot spots is in the park where she runs across two zombies feasting on a body. Another is in a plain-looking bungalow in a quiet suburb, where she finds a bone-faced vampire feasting on a young boy. A couple of jabs with her sword, and Avia successfully takes them out. But the Master Vampire is still out there.
Suddenly, the bottom drops out of Ray's world. His partner, Detective Nash, has done a search on Avia Richards and found that she is wanted for murder and that she did a stint two years ago in a mental hospital, diagnosed as schizophrenic. In her schizoid state, she believes people are being killed by vampires and that it is her duty to kill the vampires. In her mind, he explains, Avia thinks she is killing blood-sucking vampires, but she's really killing innocent people. He even gives Ray a tape showing Avia in a straitjacket and padded cell. Ray tries to get in touch with her, but she's out at another hot spot where she kills a pot-bellied vampire and two girls dressed in white shrouds. Vampire concubines, she later explains to Ray when he does catch up with her.
Ray is in a quandry. What to do? He's embarrassed that he actually believed Avia's stories about vampires and her need to stop them. As a police detective, he's bound to apprehend the criminal. But he's also in love with her. What to do? What to do? I can't let you kill again, Ray says when Avia prepares to go out hunting. This time, she says, she knows exactly where the Master Vampire is, and nothing is going to stop her. She coldcocks Ray and heads over to what looks like some luxury hotel or apartment building where she enters a room draped in black curtains. Inside, there are vampires asleep on the floor and vampire concubines feeding on the Master Vampire. All the vampires start advancing on Avia, but she takes them out with a few swings of her sword, leaving only the Master Vampire. He snarls, she kicks, he tries to choke her, she runs her sword through him.
So what's the story? Is Avia a psychotic killer or a hunter of vampires? The epilogue shows Ray and Avia sitting on a park bench and then Ray and Avia walking under some cherry trees, Avia carrying a bouquet of flowers and a teddy bear. Has she been returned to the mental hospital? The final scene is a voice-over in which Avia says, "Perhaps I'm crazy. Perhaps I'm killing innocent people. Perhaps I've lost my mind. But the fact is I AM Avia, Vampire Hunter, and I will not stop. I will continue until all vampires are dead." [Original synopsis by bj_kuehl]
