An Antithesis To The Original
Theo Robertson5 August 2005
In my review of the original ASK THE FAMILY I mentioned that the theme tune had been used later by Mint Royale for their funky dance track Rusholme With Love , a track that can be heard on VANILLA SKY , KUNG POW and the remake of GET CARTER . This new version of the staid , sterile quiz show starts with Rusholme With Love and that's the only thing that's the same as the original , especially when I say the music sets in motion a dance routine with Dick and Dom in front of a screaming audience

This version is a conscious antithesis the laughably uptight and frigid family show first produced in the 1960s . True it doesn't have HBO type profanity but it does have silliness and humour and culminates with the contestants gorging on cake . Strangely it's one of the few flops that the BBC has produced in the last couple of years where it was panned critically , suffered poor viewing figures and was cancelled after a few editions . It was certainly better than the ITV mega flops like CELEBRITY LOVE ISLAND and ROCK AROUND THE BLOCK and to be honest it's less bizarre than the original -At least here you can believe the mummy and daddy contestants have carnal relationships with each other
