- Viren Sahai (Amitabh Bachchan) is an underworld don based out of Bangkok. Viren's spoiled brat Abhir (Sushant Singh) is attacked by rival Khan (Kader Khan). Abhir had beaten up the son of a powerful businessman in a bar, for roaming around with Abhir's ex-girlfriend. The businessman went to Home Minister for justice. The Home Minister summons Abhir back to Mumbai (as he had left for Bangkok) but Viren rubbishes the summons and instead gets the Home Minister arrested in a fake murder case. The businessman now goes to Khan and Khan arranges the attack through his nephew Feroz. Viren anticipates the attack and is able to save Abhir, even though he is shot in the shoulder. Viren finds out and seeks revenge. Viren receives foolproof information that Khan and his nephew Feroz (Mohsin Khan) will be present at a local cinema theatre on a particular date, and he sets off to India to kill both of them.
In the present a simple canteen owner, Shekhar Bhatia (Akshay Kumar).Shekhar lives with his parents (Kishore (Aanjjan Srivastav) and Vimla (Bharati Achrekar)), and his younger brother Aryan (Aryeman Ramsay). Shekhar meets Dr. Kavita (Bhumika Chawla) at his cafe, who was meeting several boys one after the other. Shekhar believes that Kavita is a prostitute and confronts her and she slaps him. Later, Shekhar apologizes to Kavita, and she explains that her family is moving to Canada and want her to get married before they go, hence she is meeting prospective grooms in a hurry. Eventually Kavita falls for Shekhar's charms, and they get married.
Aryan is considered to be useless by his family and all his ventures so far have failed. Aryan has now opened a cybercafe with his friends (Sunil Grover, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and others), where they spend time watching porn.
One day Aryan runs away from home after being admonished by his father for causing losses even in the cybercafe business. Shekhar searches the whole city to find him. In reality, Aryan had left Mumbai to go for a trek with his friends, without telling his family.
During his search Shekhar witnesses Viren attacking Khan in the cinema theatre causing a stampede and decides to help the innocent people in the cinema. Whilst helping the innocent, Shekhar finds Khan's nephew fatally wounded and tries to take him to the hospital. Viren mistakenly shoots Shekhar in the back, thinking Shekhar to be Khan's man. Feroz is killed as well with a shot to the head. Shekhar survives the bullet wound; however, he is hit by Viren's car leading to his death and Viren flees the theatre. Aryan returns home and learns that Shekhar was killed when he set out to search for him.
An enraged and shocked Aryan and his group of friends form a gang and kidnap Viren's entire family, including Abhir, with the idea of bringing Viren to them and seeking justice. Viren leaves no stone upturned to find out who dared do this. Each time he zeroes in on the gang, they manage to escape with the hostages. Abhir escapes and reaches his father. Aryan tries not to harm any of Viren's family members as he knows how precious a family is. However, Viren's wife Sharda (Shernaz Patel) dies when Abhir comes back to recover his family by himself with his gang, and Viren accidentally shoots her while targeting Aryan. Viren believes Aryan is responsible for Sharda's death. Aryan calls Viren to meet him at the same place where Viren killed Shekhar, along with the police. But the police decide to help Viren; thus, Aryan's plan fails. Aryan and his friends are taken into custody.
After constant pleading by his daughter Smita (Bhavna) and daughter in law (Rujuta Deshmukh), a changed Viren decides to end it all and surrenders to the police in condition that his son will not be implicated in his crimes. After cremating his wife, he also tells the police to release Aryan and his friends, but the latter are so enraged that they set out to kill Viren. Viren, in the meantime, is in for the shock of his life when corrupt cops come out with the intention of killing him in an encounter at the behest of his own son Abhir, who apparently has now teamed up with Khan.
An intense gun battle ensues between Viren, Aryan, and the gangsters, where Viren kills the corrupt cops, Khan, Syed (Raza Murad), and Babubhai (Gulshan Grover). Abhir tries to shoot his father, but Viren ends up killing Abhir. Viren demands that Aryan kill him now, but Aryan tells him that Viren's punishment is not death. Rather it is life itself, as Viren has nothing left to live for. He simply throws his gun and walks away with his friends, with a now apparently insane Viren looking on and muttering his name Viren.
Aryan and his friends work in the same place that Shekhar used to work in. Aryan begins to manage Shekhar's canteen.
