Nora, a young woman that has lived in Colombia, South America, for some time, returns to Europe when her parents die in a fatal accident. She is received by his uncle and his family, who have taken over most of the property left behind by Nora's parents, having leased part of the house to a retired man they call 'the president'.

Her life, as Nora knew it, did not include these people she finds no connection with. She has to deal with their stinginess since she has little of her own. One day she sees a piano in an antique shop that is run by Andre, an enigmatic man. She enters and begins playing, bringing the owner to see her. The price of the instrument is way above her meager budget, but he tells her to pay it in installments.

As a way to make a living, Nora decides to put her musical talent to work and advertises herself as a piano teachers. Andre, who realizes her situation at home, suggests they could get married, something that she agrees to, a bit reluctantly, but which helps her survive in a hostile environment.

Everything changes when a former colleague of Andre comes into the shop. Nora, being alone, tries to sell him some African figures, but he is more interested in finding the man he deems as a coward because of his defection. Andre and Nora quarrel because she feels he was not sincere about past, whatever it was. When Andre realizes he is about to lose Nora, he makes a decision to go take her back to the place she loved and never should have left.

Claude Goretta, the director of this Swiss film, co-wrote the script with Pascal Laine. The film is basically a romance story where two people meet and marry because of convenience's sake, rather that for love. Eventually they get to develop feelings for one another. Garance Clavel and Roger Dumas play Nora and Andre.
