I Love The Wonderful World of Golf
ewckmc30 December 2006
It is awesome watching these old golf matches featuring golfers who are now either dead or too old to play any more. It is interesting seeing how the game has changed over the years and seeing these golfing legends in their prime. Recently there was a Wonderful World of Golf marathon of sorts on the golf channel and I got to see Gene Sarazen himself play as well as George Archer, George Knudson, Lee Elder, Bob Rosburg, Billy Casper, Chi Chi Rodreigez. These golf matches were played around the world in Brazil, the United States, Chile and Peuto Rico. Excellent show that I wish had all episodes on sale as a bundled product. Catch it if you can!

The golf show that exposed countless numbers to the game.

Warning: Spoilers
Golf is such a big sport, played almost everywhere, it may be hard for some to understand the situation back in the early 1960s. The great Pied Piper of golf, Arnold Palmer was getting into his prime as the 'King', and a young, chubby kid named Jack Nicklaus was snapping at Palmer's throne. Those of us who lived in rural areas only had faint visions of what a golf course looked like, and how the game was really played.

Shell's Wonderful World of Golf, with the great golf statesman and golf champion, Gene Sarazen, as host, and with some of the best golfers of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s participating, was the way many of us were introduced to the game. Weekly golf tournament telecasts were not available nationwide yet. This program typically pitted two of the game's best against each other for an 18-hole match, at courses all over the world. And, we didn't just see the golf. The program also took us on a tour of the area and the country.

This is the program that also allowed us to get to know the golfers, With the interviews before the match began, the comments after 9 holes, and the presentation of the checks. Sarazen was the perfect host, and the matches were always entertaining. I re-watch some of the old matches any time I can.
