This is an honorable mention in favorite shoot em ups; this is also another edition in Toplian's shoot em up line up and it's one of their best in my book anyway and really helped their shoot em up ship take off. This game is a loose sequel to their previous game "Tiger Heli" and it was much better at least I thought so and this turned out to be a huge hit in the arcades. It was such a hit there were multiple ports on multiple platforms; I remember playing and I of course own the NES and Genesis adaptations of this game and they were both solid, really felt like having the arcade game at home with me.
But now let's get down to business, the game does the same things as "Tiger Heli" but has made lots of refinements and improvements, that were revolutionary for its time. For one thing the game allowed a second player, which at the time wasn't something that happened in the genre as most games in the genre were solo campaigns. The control and gameplay are solid, it's what you'd expect from a shoot em up as you have your fire button but also your emergency bombs which are very handy in destroying a multi number of enemies within your parameter. Draining the boss's life meter but also to use for a quick escape from multiple bullets converging on you with no escape.
One of the other features which was revolutionary for its time is that you have multiple weapons that you retrieve during your dangerous flight. Each of them has strengths and weaknesses, from your regular gun, the double green lasers which shoot out more quickly and accurately some kicks but defense slightly weak from how narrow focused your shots are. The blue spread bullets that cover you from the front wide radius but very little kick. And there are the yellow brown bullets that shoot from all four directions, front, back and side to side, but again like with the blue bullets little kick. I also like just in most to all Toplian's shooters you can build up your weapon power, depending on how much you collect and whether you want to stick with your weapon, the choice is yours on that matter.
I really like how wide and detailed the environment you fly and shoot in really is, it really gave that feel of having a lot of freedom of movement and flying in big spaces. Of course, the wider the course the greater the danger as there are of course all kinds of things that outnumber you and want to kill you. Basically, your typical stuff like gun turrets, tanks, enemy choppers, ships you name it. Even though you can blow them away easily it's their numbers that give them strength, but also as you progress though the levels there are different kinds of enemies with different maneuvers and attacks.
Pacing is also improved, which might make the levels seem short but that is because of the fast pace the game is going, which is a good thing as it means you don't overstay your welcome. But of course, like in most shooters it also means the difficulty is ramped up and this game is no doubt on the hard side, as you get further on the game that difficulty just keeps ramping up. It's difficult just to stay alive without a scratch, as the enemies and the danger just keep mounting up. But that is part of what makes this game fun as it just motivates you to do better and just simply get further than before.
And of course, there is the music which is very good as it's essential to all shoot em ups; this game has plenty of memorable tracks. My favorite track is the first level which is just cool and memorable in my book, it just sings out chopper shooting action. The track you can say could almost be as memorable and catchy as the theme for the TV show "Air Wolf", which is part of why I played this game as the game to me is the closest we'd get to an arcade adaptation of that show.
This shoot em up classic has enough of a bite to keep you flying for more.
Rating: 3 and a half stars.
