Not a great game but it has its place in history
EasternZZ22 March 2018
This game was very popular on the Sega Genesis. It is a very short, bare-bones beat em up. You can beat this in less than 20 minutes.

+)The music is memorable and the voice clips will remain with you forever

+) Each stage is very different from the previous stage

+) You get a new beast form for each level

+) The controls are very easy to play

+) The story is good

~Extremely short game but it has to be since it was originally released on the arcade ~Some cheap enemies that will trap you and kill you quick ~No continues if you lose all your life ~Very basic fighting with one animation for punching and one for kicking. There are no combos.

Overall this game is fun to play if you have 15-20 minutes of free time. Good to play on handheld on the plane or whatever.

A childhood favorite

Warning: Spoilers
Sure, the plot might be pretty basic, and the gameplay might be a little bit repetitive, but during my childhood I didn't care at all about that: I really enjoyed this game back then, and I still found it charming.

The final boss is a little bit underwhelming (After all those monsters, demons and zombies, the last thing I could have expected as the climatic opponent was a purple version of Rocksteady from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) but I really enjoyed the humorous reveal of the whole thing being just a movie.

"Welcome to your DOOM!!!"

Oh come on! where is the love for "Altered Beast"? This is truly one of the most entertaining, exciting, Horror/Action games for any system. This game truly exploits in a positive manner the capacity of Sega Genesis. The music, the controls, the settings, etc. are truly craziness in 16 bits.

This Video game is primitive on technical aspects but it's sure one hell of a fun trip. I remember playing this game for hours and always found it interesting and genuinely creepy!. It's not exactly a Horror game but it has some elements to consider it as one.

I don't want to spoil the fun for those who haven't played it, but I can truly recommend it. There is a lot of action, dark settings, a cool soundtrack with chilling sounds and voices... what else do you want?!

This is an underrated classic. Please, give the credit it deserves.

Absurdly short Genesis game
Aaron13755 June 2018
It is a good thing that this game came with the Genesis in most cases, because I would hate to put out the amount of money it takes to buy a new game on this thing back in the day. This one started out as an arcade game and it is a pretty good arcade game. It is not too long and is actually winnable. Herein lies the problem, translate that to a console and you have a game that will not even kill an hour! Heck, an hour, I meant like 10 minutes! It would have not even been worth a rental!

The story has a centurion that was killed being given a second chance to save some god's daughter. I just say it is Zeus. The daughter is captured by some bald head dude that always greets our hero with the line, "Welcome to your doom" despite being beaten again and again. The centurion with the help of the white wolf can turn into a more powerful, and muscular warrior and then into a beast with fantastical powers! Why Zeus could not just make him a beast to begin with is only known to the gods!

The game play is simple, you punch and kick your way through hordes of the undead and monsters to get through each stage and fight the bad guy at the end who turns into some hideous monster. You collect power ups so that you can turn into a beast who is super powerful, because if you do not, forget about getting by the final stage boss!

I just played this on the Sega Classics Collection on PS4 and I was completely floored at how short this game is! I remember the stages being a bit longer, but for the most part they make a Super Mario Bros stage look huge by comparison. There just is not enough to this game to grant it its own cartridge. Perhaps they could have made the game longer for its port over, because what is good in an arcade may not translate to a decent game for your home console.

Altered Beast!
Movie Nuttball25 February 2005
Altered Beast is one of the most exciting video games! The characters, the action, the scariness and the sure thrill of excitement makes this game a fun non-stop playing time! Below is a brief look how I think the game is!

Game Play: The game play is very good. There is really basic controls here and is easy to perform. Novice gamers should have a good time here!

Graphics: The graphics are wonderful especially for the Sega Genesis System! The backgrounds are really beautiful!

Difficulty: The game is easy but as it goes on you find out that it will become more difficult!

Music: The music is great! Just fantastic catchy tunes through out the game! In My opinion its some of the best music ever in a video game!

Sound: The sound is great. Nuff said!

Overall: I have always loved Altered Beast! If you like scary and action adventure games then I strongly recommend you play this game!

Good arcade game, but it kind of sucks on console.
Aaron137510 April 2011
This is one of those games that was really cool to play in the video arcades back in the day. It was fast paced and very winnable. However, that is kind of the problem when it is switched to a console. Nothing was added to the Sega release of this game and you end up with a game that a person can win in like twenty minutes, maybe less. Thankfully, this game came with my Sega so it is not to bad, but there really is not much to this one. You have Zeus in the sky saying arise from your graves and your hero emerges from a tombstone and proceeds to fight legions of undead monsters. Then he collects a white power up and becomes larger with no more apparent ability. He gets another of these orbs and proceeds to become even more muscular, once again with no other apparent ability. Finally, he collects one more orb and morphs into an animal/human hybrid...a furry if you like. So yeah, like the old cartoon He-Man this game is kind of gay in retrospect. At the end of the level you fight a boss and then it is on to the next level. You turn into a wolfman, I think a tiger or some kind of cat, a bear, a dragon and finally the golden wolf. Though that last one is kind of lazy when looking back. Fun in the arcades, but it becomes very tiresome when you own it. Not like you could really do all that much other than use a code and decide what the guy turns into in each stage. Meanwhile, Zeus tells his hero to arise and grow larger! Now gain even more manly muscles! Now turn into a naughty beast man! One has to wonder what Zeus does in his spare time.
