The first thing that hits you about this short is the unusual way they animated the film. Instead of traditional animation, it appears as if paintings were created and then sliced apart so that the characters or ocean moved when the separate pieces were moved each time the film was exposed. This stop-motion style is similar to the animation of Terry Gilliam on the "Monty Python" TV show, but instead of using existing artwork, the makers of LA DEMOISELLE ET LE VIOLONCELLISTE painted them in what appears to be oil or tempera. It's very odd and not exactly a style I liked very much.
As for the story, the whole things a bit surreal and might make your head hurt if you think too much about it. A cellist is playing on the cliffs overlooking the ocean when a lady is swept away to her assumed death. He quickly gets a boat to save her, but in the end they both drown. Here's where it gets weird. They both are then shown at the bottom of the sea and they look happy and very much alive. Then some sea creatures fight and the couple go take a peek at life on land. In the end, they chose to go back to their life under the sea.
So apart from odd artwork the story was totally bizarre. Some might really like it, but it just wasn't my cup of tea, so to speak. Unusual but not especially likable.
