Peace In Our Time
boblipton9 May 2023
Mickey 'Himself' Maguire (aka Mickey Rooney) and the other kids put on a show celebrating peace, which ends, of course, in a massive fight.

It's based on Fontaine Fox's TOONERVILLE TROLLEY comic strip, which ran from 1908 through 1955, when Fox retired. It's based on a trolley that Fox saw up in the Pelham area of New York City's Bronx borough, and the eccentrics he populated the small, suburban town with grew to include the Skipper, the Powerful Katrinka, Little Woo-Woo Wortle, and a host of other improbably named and unlikely individuals -- basically, if you go on world-building for almost half a century, you're going to get a lot of strange details.

I don't care for the Mickey Maguire shorts, which were chaotic -- reflecting Fox's imaginary town -- and existing in bad copies, like the one of this I saw. They strike me as bad OUR GANG imitations. Nonetheless, they were popular enough to remain in production from 1927 through 1936, all starring Rooney as far as I know, and numbering at least 55 by any count.
