Richard Hearne plays an old duffer called Mr Pastry, in what would now be regarded quite rightly as a piece of stereotypic ageism. I'm not quite sure how old Mr Hearne was at the time, but he certainly looked authentic.
Mr Pastry was, like so many who came after, a clumsy, accident-prone, absent-minded individual with a heart of gold. From late 1950's to early 1960's he was more or less a comedic staple on children's television. Begtinning with guest appearances, he quickly graduated to his own show. Then just as quickly; he was down to guest appearances again. He disappeared from television soon after, and I think I recollect his appearing in pantomime for a season. Comedy grew up pretty quickly before the decade was out, and the contrived, juvenile slapstick of his generation was soon completely eclipsed, even for kids.
I doubt if any of his programmes still remain in archive.
