A young Westerner has fallen under the influence of an outcast, and is continually in his company, to the sorrow of his young wife. One day the sheriff of the district calls at the cabin during the husband's absence. He is an old lover of the woman's, and would resume the old relations, until she shows him the wedding ring on her finger. Shortly after the sheriff has ridden away, the husband returns, shaking with fear and begging to be hidden. He has been the unwilling witness of the murder of a settler by his companion. The woman gives him food, and he takes to the bush for security. The sheriff posts up a notice offering a reward for the capture, dead or alive, of the murderer, and the real culprit, reading it, decides to kill his accomplice and claim the reward. Seizing his opportunity, he shoots the young man, but the sheriff, comparing the empty shell from the gun which he finds by the body with another found by the side of the murdered settler, finds them exactly similar, and holds up the rogue. The latter manages to seize his revolver, and slips away, after "winging" the sheriff. He lowers himself by a rope down a steep cliff, but the woman has watched him, and severs the rope by repeated blows with a sharp piece of rock.
