- In this, as in every episode of Ballykissangel, many of the scenes occur in Fitzgerald's Pub. Most of the characters, including the Catholic priests, drink alcohol, usually beer or whiskey, and usually responsibly.
- The publican and several locals receive a summons for drinking on licenced premises after hours.
- Padraig cooks a meal using Guinness as an ingredient. He doesn't allow his teenaged son to partake.
- Two characters drink wine while preparing a meal.
- The local guard (policeman) offers Fr Clifford a drink as thanks for babysitting. He declines as it is outside opening time.

- Padraig tells a joke about a man whose mother has just died and then realises that Father Clifford is behind him. His mother died in the previous episode. There is an intense moment and everyone is embarrassed but Fr Clifford takes it in good humour.

- There appears to be sexual tension between a (celibate) Catholic priest and a recently separated bar owner. The priest admits that he can't stop thinking about her. She later says that she feels the same way about him. He kisses her but she stops him and leaves the room. They share several tender moments. Eventually he tells her that he loves her.
