A Classic! Beautiful in every way.
I bought all four on VHS years ago and bought 1 & 2 on DVD. Flood took out #3 & #4, I've been searching for them for years. Why? I consider #1 to be one of the finest films of its genre I have ever seen. The blending of the classical music, be it opera or instrumental was absolute genius. I consider this film as art. The discovery of their new sexual identity that came slowly and forbidden was an all too true reminder of that time be it East or West especially in the military. The now, historical aspects of the series is rarely seen in any film in the West regardless of its genre. The primary cast were of course beautiful but more than that, true athletes. The story line was real to me. I was stationed in West Berlin as a photographer in the early 70's, so the blending of the Sport Club scenes were a welcome memory of that time.
Ok, the constant over dubbed grunts & groans diminished the film for me, but that's minor (sort of) complaint and typical of Eastern European films.
Listening to the full commentary by William Higgins on the production of the film really added to my understanding and appreciation as well. It made the film and its actors real and not just "performers" acting out a fantasy. How they made it while dealing with the cold weather conditions that I could feel as well, again, I say, true athletes.
So, perhaps after all these years will I finally be able to see 3 & 4 again? I hope so. I only got to watch them twice before the flood and I'd like to see how it all turned out. With great respect and appreciation, John W. Hoyt Perry, Kansas.
