Allow me to contribute some factual information.
Melty Blood is a 2D fighting game made for the PC by a Japanese doujin(fan-made) software company called Watanabe Seisakujo (Watanabe Productions), now known as French-Bread.
It is a spin off of a visual novel called Tsukihime (sue-key-hee-may, Moon Princess) released two years prior to Melty Blood.
A year after Melty Blood was released, an anime adaption of the visual novel the game was based on, was created and titled Shingetsutan (shen-get-sue-tawn, Lunar Legend) Tsukihime.
The anime consisted of 12 episodes and while the production value was good in its own right, it was generally criticized by fans of the visual novel for its lack of completeness and character design; as there are roughly more than 1900 pages of text in the visual novel, and the characters exuded a different personality than their VN counterparts.
As for the game itself: It has an unusually high amount of production value not seen in many games of its kind, and for its platform. It saw several patches, an expansion pack with subsequent patches, several arcade releases, a PS2 release, and is due for another PC release in late July consisting of the latest version in the Melty Blood series.
While being a deprecated version of the series, it stands well on its own for having a story mode in spirit of the visual novel it was based on, but instead of text-based choices, your combat ability (or lack thereof) will decide the result. It also contains multiple endings, nice artwork and very well-animated sprites. Easy to pick up but deep enough for professional play. Highly recommended.
