The Instant Films short, "Thumbing It", a literal and metaphoric study of relationships gets a thumbs up.
The Instant Films short, "Thumbing It" was written, shot, edited, and screened in forty-eight hours. This feat is a daunting one for most filmmakers. Still writer, Maureen Cassidy creates a moving relationship between wedding-goers reflected in the metaphor of a fragile egg, balancing on a small spoon. Director, Lily Mariye, progresses the story through time and space, showing how far the couple has come together. Will they last for this leg of their journey? Will the egg maintain its balance? Valerie Dillman, Mark T. Buford, and Pat Towne are convincing in their conflicted roles, although audio levels are not always balanced between characters. The camera moves smoothly over a lot of terrain, with occasional shaky shots. There is at times too much empty space above the subjects, and a few more camera angles, would help keep the pace. However, a lot of ground is covered in this short, stopping only to relish a couple of realistic stunts by the beautiful Valerie Dillman. Overall, "Thumbing It" gets a thumbs up for a short created from beginning to end in one weekend.
