Decent Western with Guinan
White Squaw, The (1920)
** 1/2 (out of 4)
Texas Guinan plays a movie star who imagines she's back in the Old West. Living with her brother Tom, a mysterious man shows up and he turns out to be a revenue agent who is seeking the brother. A gang of moonshiners find out about the man and capture him so Texas comes to his rescue even if it means her brother must go to jail. If you're familiar with D.W. Griffith's THE REVENUE MAN AND THE GIRL then you'll probably see a similar storyline. The Griffith film has a revenue man coming to the hills of Kentucky where he falls in love with the daughter of a man he must arrest. Griffith used his story to stick up for the poor while this film goes all out in action. At just 13-minutes the running time goes by fairly well, although you do have to wonder why a Hollywood actress would daydream that she's in the West. Even if she did dream this then why on Earth did she dream such negative things? Either way you have Guinan who is once again pretty good in her role as she's certainly believable as the tough girl and it was rather nice seeing her during the shoot out scenes. Paul Hartigan plays the revenue man and isn't too bad either. The ending has a big shoot out as the moonshiners has people trapped inside a cabin. There's no real drama in any of these scenes as the direction isn't the greatest but this movie was made to show off Guinan and for the most part it does that.
