Powerful, captivating and passionate!

This movie was my first formal introduction into the world of flamenco and it left me breathless, with a beating heart. The power, focus and strength of Carmen Amaya are still with me - it was in the darkness of the Boston MFA theater that I understood the real meaning of the word "duende". Her controlled footwork and amazing hand movements were all the more captivating when presented in the context of interviews with her family of musicians and specifically her niece. I learned about the passion that her niece is now bringing to present flamenco on the Boston stages. And I saw in this passion the continuation of the completely self-sacrificing performances of Carmen Amaya - performances that would often leave her in a state of exhausted semi-consciousness. Even as I write this review 4 years after seeing the movie, I clearly remember the outfits, the poise, and the rawness of Carmen's dances. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. Whether you want to see rare footage of Carmen Amaya or you're looking for a film that describes what the art of flamenco is, you will be enthralled!
