transfer comment to feature film THE WANNABEES.
It is almost impossible to describe the disgust I have for THE WANNABEES: an offensive and wasteful Australian film. Writer-Director Nick Giannopolous is an Australian Greek comedian who has fudged a career in playing what he describes as The Wog Boy... in fact he made a stage show of it and then a film ... and THE WOG BOY was a big success ....he plays an obnoxious immigrant son who lives with his parents drives silly ugly cars and the film basically made multicultural fun (like BORAT) of every Greek-Australian cliché imaginable. It grossed a healthy $13m for a budget of about $3m. Flushed (as in S bend) with success from this unique cinematic moment, he was able to 'create a sequel' of sorts and was given a ridiculous amount of public money to create THE WANNABEES... Giannopolous is no Orson Welles or Preston Sturges or even Coen... he is basically a stand up comic whose ego bloated itself into fee paying drivel warped into a foul mouthed blue joke film that incredibly involves children....THE WANNABEES is an offensive riff on the Australian kids pop group THE WIGGLES... instead in this WANNABEES crap Mr G and his grinning swearing bozo pals have decided to make up a so called comedy version of a lazy dumb misfit group playing kids parties ogling their mothers and being rude and offensive to the kids. It is all supposed to be funny in a BAD SANTA sort of way and completely misfires in every scene. The public hated it, the crits spewed and the film disappeared... more wasteful fees paid to the cast and crew from the pubic purse. BOYTOWN made a few years later was the same sort of drivel except this time copied THE FULL MONTY with has-been middle aged jerks in Lycra. Trash cinema.
