Most popular Japanese TV serial in India after Giant Robot
hnggg7 December 2006
Oshin was the most popular Japanese TV serial on Indian television after Johnny sokko and his Giant Robot. I think the series was not completed on India's state TV channel.

Though I did not see all of oshin's episodes, I did see her from the beginning to when she got married. I admired how she could hlod views that were different from those elder t oher. Also, i was surprised to know many people taught her Japanese, I did not know then that learning Japanese was so diffcult !

I have heard praise for Oshin from ppl from other countries like Iran, etc.

Lessons for everybody

Way back when the Television in India did not have too many channels, except the ones run by state, Oshin was nightly episode. We all watched it ,I was very small then. I watched it again on you tube and I can really understand now why it creates that relation with each woman watching it. It gives the hope and courage to face situations and have the "Can do " attitude. Although times have changed, some of the situations that Oshin faces are still the same. The story telling is beautiful, the actors and the whole depiction is well done. It gives us a good picture of Japan during Meiji, especially for outsiders. The journey of Oshin and how she braves against all odds that life throws at her are depicted. Some of the episodes are very painful to watch but it is part of the story.

Oshin stands alone in terms of her worldwide fame!!

Who is the most famous Japanese person in the world?

Perhaps the answer is Oshin, the heroine of the popular NHK morning series, which was broadcast for a year from April 1983. With the cooperation of the Japan Foundation, NHK International produced the international edition of "Oshin" for worldwide distribution and eventually "Oshin" came to be aired in 59 countries and regions.

Reports say that in China alone, as many as 200 million people watched "Oshin", while in Iran, female Japanese tourists have often been addressed as "Oshin". The Indonesian broadcaster was flooded with protests from viewers because the series was being broadcast while supper was being prepared. There is no doubt about it ; Oshin stands alone in terms of her worldwide fame.

How can I forget Oshin?
hesam_mehr27 May 2008
Sunday nights, 9:00 pm was the time in which Oshin was broadcast on Iranian TV. I was a 7-8 years old boy living in a small town (I am now 28), all the relatives that didn't have a color TV gathered in our home to watch Oshin (translated to Persian as "Years far from home"). The scenes still shine in my mind and the music would remain for years. The sorrowful story of a rural girl that battles with the violating life and poverty. Oshin was for some years an Icon for Iranian women. It is said that an Iranian woman was arrested by the Islamic regime just for naming Oshin as her idol instead of Zeinab (Daughter of an Islamic leader who is known symbol of toleration in Shiite). High influence of this serial, although may also be because of specific social conditions of Iranian Society, never repeated for any other foreign TV productions. 10 out of 10, for the artistic merits and for the great nostalgia.

On Saudi TV
djrose007-12 November 2015
When we watched Oshin I was working, and living, in Saudi Arabia. We had small children, a baby, a 3 year old and a 10 year old. Oshin was a programme that had all of us riveted to the TV following the progress of this little girl to womanhood and her success in business from her very poor beginnings. It had nothing shocking so very suitable for small children. It was a great topic of conversation in the expat community and even with Saudi's that I worked with. The acting was superb and the fact that it was in Japanese did not detract from the pleasure we had in watching it. The subtitles were very good and we would read them out to the children.

I've only watched up till episode 297, does anybody knows where I can find the rest of the chapters? I grew up watching Oshin back in the Dominican Republic. I recently started watching the episodes with my daughter but unfortunately we reached to episode 297 and nothing beyond that. I'd like to know where I can find the rest of the episodes.I've only watched up till episode 297, does anybody knows where I can find the rest of the chapters?
