A little tragic for a romance
morpho_breaker25 August 2005
I saw this movie on TV on a special Cantonese-speaking channel a few years ago while I was traveling. It was a very stormy day.

Basically it begins with some guy, a comic-book artist, named Man, unhappy that his girlfriend, Jenny, left him, so she could begin her new life in another country (I think it was the USA). He is so unhappy that he changes the name of his dog (a golden retriever) to Jenny. The funny thing is that the dog he renames, is actually a male. After some sort of a mishap, we see Man take his dog to a young and somewhat beautiful veterinarian, named Jean. Man develops some sort of crush on her, and later on, they date, and form a relationship. However, Jean's best friend Joyce comes into the picture, and somehow, Joyce and Man have a few meetings followed by conversations. Then bad things happen between Jean and Man involving commitments in relationships, but then bad things happen between Joyce and Man involving a newborn kid and leukemia. It's up to Man to solve these problems and handle these situations.

The merit of this film is that the story was well-written, but it needed some improvements. The acting by the lead was not as good compared to Tony Leung Chiu Wai, or even Andy Lau. I didn't like this movie because the story was not really that exciting to me. It was tragedy after another tragedy in each scene, although there were some good things that happen to the protagonist. By the time the movie ended, I was not really entertained or did not get this wonderful feeling that almost everyone experiences after watching a romance (Casablanca, Garden State, Love Actually, Amelie are examples of movies where viewers get this wonderful feeling) rather bored and disappointed. It was my first HK romance film that I watched, hopefully there are better ones out there.
