Angelina Jolie in Taking Lives (2004)

Goofs

Taking Lives

Edit

Continuity

When Illeana throws something at the full-length mirror, all of the pieces on top fall out. In the next shot, we see her reflection on a piece of mirror that is back in place at the top of the mirror.
During the car chase, there are several shots from the point of view of the chase car. The barrel of the gun being pointed at the driver in the lead car is clearly an older style revolver. However, in subsequent shots and flashbacks we see that the gun is a more modern semi-automatic.
In the farm house Juliette puts the kettle on, changes into a nightdress, opens a box, takes a bedside lamp out and rigs it up and is then part way through reading a book before the kettle boils.
At 1:10:20, Illeana (Angelina Jolie) is wearing sunglasses. She hears shot fired & runs upstairs (1:10:25) - no sunglasses. She hears Costa (Ethan Hawke) & Hart (Kiefer Sutherland) drive off at 1:11:06 - again sunglasses.
When Costa is waiting for Hart in the bar, the bartender offers a refill and Costa is holding his empty glass (with ice in it). In the next shot, his glass is back on the bar and is full.

Factual errors

In Moncton, New Brunswick there is no Moncton Metropolitan Police as seen on police vehicles later in the film. Municipal policing is enforced by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

One of the Montreal police officers reassures Costa that the serial killer "won't get within 50 yards of you". While Canada is officially metric, its proximity to the U.S. as well as stubbornness among older generations means that in several instances old imperial measurements are still used. Many people still use feet and inches instead of meters for height, and many Canadians still refer to yards instead of meters for distance.
Scott and Duval go into an apartment and search with their guns out but their fingers aren't on the triggers.

Errors in geography

The three lead police investigators all speak with Parisian French accents. Quebec French is as distinct from Parisian French as British English is distinct from New York English.
While the movie is set in Montreal, Quebec, several scenes were filmed in Quebec City some 150 miles north east from Montreal. The bridge scene and Le chateau Frontenac are in Quebec City not Montreal. A police uniform is one scene has the Quebec City insignia.
The police helicopters landing at the Moncton (New Brunswick) train station are Sûreté du Québec (Quebec provincial police) helicopters. Even if the SQ were authorized to carry out an intervention in New Brunswick, Moncton is over 200 kilometres from the Quebec border - there's no way those helicopters could have gotten there in the 20 minutes the police said they had.
When Scott is eating breakfast in the restaurant with the other detectives, a French-style police siren can be heard in the background. Canadian police sirens sound just like their American counterparts.
The VIA Rail station in Moncton is tiny, and in no way looks like whatever large station is depicted.

Plot holes

Costa buys Illeana a handgun for her own protection. Handguns in Canada are restricted weapons and can't simply be purchased like they are in the states. They are also used only for collecting or for target practice. You can't use one in self defense.

Character error

Commenting a photograph of her son, Mrs. Asher says that "their first symphony" was "The Magic Flute". "The Magic Flute" is a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart opera, not a symphony.
