More than just a game
Warge2 December 2007
Operation Flashpoint is not your average shoot em up game. It is a one of its kind soldier simulator - which is the reason USMC (and others as well) use a modified version as squad leader training. The game OFP itself is excellent, hands down. However, by adding all the mods and extras made by the community, it is possible you might look at a brand new game. The core game is set in the 80's between the USSR and the US, but I have played as a WW2 German soldier and a modern day Somalian militia to just mention a few. The only thing which is a let down is the graphics but even that can be fixed with the aforementioned mods. Add to that the really easy to use mission editor and you have a package that will last a very long time.

Brilliant soldier sim

Cool game, must buy. Looks a little dated now but still a brilliant game all the same. Massive playing areas bring a whole new meaning to video games, where it can take a long time to run from one side of an Island to the other. Being able to use any type of vehicle or plane is good too.

best soldier game ever

Warning: Spoilers
This game is absolutely brilliant. There are multiple ways to do a mission. You can do it on foot, or you can go that enemy base near by and use their own hardware against them. Also the action menu is awesome. From putting your gun on your back, to getting in a vehicle, to lighting a campfire. Flashpoint has 4 islands (5 once you've got Resistance) that are very big. You can walk anywhere on them. You can command a squad up to 12, and you can order them to do anything you want. Flashpoint also has a mission editor, so you can make anything if you put your mind to it. You can also customize your main character (name, face, radio voice, voice pitch, etc) It's very realistic, it's not a game where you have a health bar, you (and the other AI) can get killed instantly with just one bullet. Something else neat is that you can mark things on your map (such as marking the location of a car) There's also a 35 mission long campaign, and single missions. There's 2 more campaigns once you get the expansion packs, with multiple endings. The game is made by the Czechs. They really do make the best stuff. Might I add, Flashpoint came out in 2001, so that's living proof that excellent technology existed in that year. Operation Flashpoint is the benchmark of all soldier games.

absorbing real-time tactical military shooter

Warning: Spoilers
Its some time now since I played this game but I do remember being totally immersed in the realism of the struggle for power in the Island group of Maldon. The realism and tension offered by this game is simply astounding. Some of the campaigns require a solo effort, IE, to snipe a dignitary at an opposing army base, whilst others require you to take charge of a group of soldiers to conduct assaults, search and destroy, convoy protection, fly A10 tank killers, escape from an enemy camp by foot, steal a tank, steal a helicopter, steal a jeep, you name it, if you can see it you can drive or fly it. All missions are in real time, so if you start a mission at 2am and you are still there 3hours later, (which is very possible with a game as complex as this)you can watch the sun coming up (which is breathtaking in its own right)whilst being shot at, lol. I played this game and its expansion packs for about a year, which is unheard of for a predominately single player game. The tank campaigns are absolutely terrific, you and your crew can jump in and out of the tanks at will if you feel you need to, or steal another tank/truck/tractor/plane/helo/ to complete a mission. The choice is your's, thats the main draw with this game, you are not hobbled with how you achieve you objectives, you decide everything. One of the missions I remember was preventing a column of tanks from reaching a nearby township, I mined the roadway, and after all but one of the tanks, was destroyed, I snuck up behind it and placed a charge, then crept away to safety before detonating it, very satisfying indeed. On another mission I had to destroy a fuel dump and then escape on foot to the LZ to be picked up, instead, after blowing the dump, I stole a tank and drove to a village on the other side of the island and engaged a group of enemy tanks and troops, destroying all of them, then drove overland, smashing down trees as I went, to the LZ. Overall I would give the OFP series 10/10. The most complete, engaging and realistic, Tactical Military Shooter I have played ever. Even though its getting a bit old now.....If you like this type of game, do yourself a favour...and "GET IT NOW" Everything about it is just about perfect.
