Taking The Rap (On The Road)
writers_reign30 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
It's difficult to ascertain a target audience for this one. It's been on release in France for a while and has yet to attract a comment on IMDb. Richard Bohringer is a fine actor whose Best Actor Cesar for Le Grand Chemin was well deserved and daughter Romane appears to have put her 'wild child' days behind her and turned in at least one fine stage performance in a French adaptation of The Glass Menagerie. Some time ago Richard wrote an autobiographical novel and has now directed a film version that may best be described as self-indulgent. He plays a character named Richard, Romane plays a character called Romane; another actor plays a younger Richard and so on. Plots, however, are thin on the ground. People schmooze in bars, a young writer sits at Richard's feet and presumably learns from him. Richard 'performs' a passionate, frenzied quasi rap with a small group of musicians and goes on the road. That's about it. Annie Girardot makes a fleeting appearance and steals the movie which, to be fair, is not that hard to do. One best forgotten.
