David Sheldon, best known as the Angel of Death, was one of the guys WCW booker Ole Anderson had wanted for the Black Scorpion gimmick. He ended up being one of the fake Black Scorpions who attacked Sting after the main event and was unmasked. Also, according to Ric Flair, Al Perez, who played the Black Scorpion at Clash of the Champions XII: Mountain Madness/Fall Brawl '90 (1990), was supposed to remain as the character until his unmasking at this event. Flair had also said that the choice for the big reveal of the Black Scorpion had come down to himself and Barry Windham. Flair volunteered thinking the gimmick wouldn't hurt him, whereas it could hurt Windham, who recently portrayed an imposter Sting at Halloween Havoc (1990). Flair also wanted another World Heavyweight Championship run in return for playing the Black Scorpion.
