How Lazy Is She?
boblipton19 December 2022
Wanda Wiley is so lazy that she takes exercise by playing tennis while seated in an armchair. Still, when handsome law man Bob Reeves captures her attention, she's willing to get up and go after him.

Wiley was the star of a series of very good short subjects towards the end of the 1920s. She's almost forgotten, largely because her employers, the Stern Brothers, gave up making movies rather than bother to rewire for sound. Her movies were fast, inventive, cartoonish, and she invariably wound up doing something improbably athletic in them.

Here the cartoonish aspect is cover by her attempts to shoot a rabbit in a hole that would form about 40% of the relationship between Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny in the 1940s. The others are covered by a sequence in which she finds a skunk and thinks it a cat, and later, captures a gang of bootleggers after mounting a horse backwards.

There aren't that many of Miss Wiley's 46 shorts that are available, but I certainly urge you to see any that you can, and this one in particular.
