- Inspired by the enigmatic 6000 year-old rock carvings recently discovered on the shores of the White Sea in Northwest Russia, Beluga Speaking Across Time, a documentary film for television, reveals the elusive world of the white beluga whale and its role in Arctic culture, past, present and future.
Along the remote shorelines of Solovetsky Island in the White Sea beluga whales congregate in the summer months as they've done for thousands of years. Today, this small and fragile population of whales endures threats of commercial hunting and ecological devastation, results of a careless modern world. A dedicated group of scientists with the Russian Academy of Science has recently chosen Solovetsky Island as the site for their innovative study on white beluga communication, contribution to further understanding of beluga whale behavior and the continued efforts for whale conservation in the White Sea.
As this space-age research meets the stone age messages from the past, we are led to the Eastern Canadian Arctic where the living culture and traditions of the Inuit recall the events and images of beluga whales depicted in the ancient petroglyphs of Northwest Russia. Today, Canada's Inuit face a collision of modern and traditional values as the continuation of subsistence whale hunting puts them at the forefront of environmental and ethical debates.
Beluga Speaking Across Time is a reflection on the past, when humans may have lived in communion with these whales. It is a speculation on the future when technological breakthroughs may someday give us the opportunity to communicate with whales and nature. It is a examination of the present where science and conservation, nature and mysticism, gives voice to this extraordinary species of whale as it speaks to us across time.
