Goofs

The Station Agent

Edit

Continuity

After Olivia returns home from the hospital, a brief shot shows Fin and Olivia watching the sunset from her dock. It's actually from an earlier scene in which Fin and Olivia had a conversation on the dock. They're wearing the same clothing.
Near the beginning of the film, Olivia's shirt has a small hole right in the middle of the front. The fabric is undamaged in subsequent scenes.
When Joe is making lunch for Fin and Olivia, the meat has grill marks, even though it's being fried with onions in a pan.
When Fin picks up the groceries for Olivia, he has his bag on his shoulder. The bag is not there when he delivers the groceries, but it returns after he has left Olivia's house.
Fin goes into a bar and orders a beer the level in the glass goes up and down. In some shots the glass gas a large head in others none.

Revealing mistakes

When Fin is selecting the train book in the library, he pulls it from a shelf that contains fiction, mostly James Patterson novels. Fiction and non-fiction books would never be on the same shelf, even in a very small library.
When Fin is at the grocery checkout, the cashier's register display says the lane is closed instead of displaying the price.

Miscellaneous

The rail crossing bells and lights go, Fin opens his door, but there is no sound or sight of a train going past.
When Olivia visits Fin at night with a bottle of bourbon, daylight is visible in the window behind the sofa where Olivia sits after falling down.

Errors in geography

Early in the film, before leaving Hoboken for Newfoundland, Fin visits an A&P. At checkout, there is a display behind Fin showing the Daily Record Newspaper for Sale. The Daily record is a Morris County newspaper and would not be on sale in Hoboken.
Set in New Jersey, but Emily's car has Arizona license plates.

Character error

Fin pulls out a library card from a book that Olivia had checked out in her name. In the old library card/check system, the card would have been kept at the library to keep track of who had checked it out. It shouldn't have been placed back in the book, then released to check out.
Fin identifies the train route from Los Angeles to San Francisco as the Starlight Express. It's actually the Coast Starlight. "Starlight Express" is an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
After finding the camera Olivia left at Fin's door, Joe tells Cleo it's for train chasing. But Joe wasn't present when Fin explained train chasing to Olivia.
