Suraag review :

Directed by Jagmohan Mundra (aka Jag Mundhra) known more for his soft porn English movies; Suraag was an interesting suspense thriller he made in the late '70s. Unfortunately, the film's negative got stuck with the Indian customs which delayed its theatrical release by around two years.

The film starred Sanjeev Kumar and Geeta Siddharth as a couple living in Los Angeles who help their friend Parikshat Sahani search for his bride. The marriage takes place in India and the bride (Shabana Azmi) is to arrive in LA after securing her visa. But the day she lands in America, the lady goes missing and Parikshat is hounded by a blackmailer...

Jag Mundhra's direction was competent; Sanjeev Kumar was reliably restrained as always and Parikshat did well in the meatiest role of his career. Geeta Siddharth was another actor who got a rare lead role here with Sanjeev including a bedroom song. Ooh la la!! Shabana made her presence felt even in a small role. There were quite a few guest appearances like Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Tina Munim, Mehmood and the sexy Asha Sachdev.

Suraag premiered on Doordarshan sometime in 1991 when I saw it. It hooked me so much that I bunked my Class X Maths lecture just to complete the movie. It was later the infuriated teacher told us that quite a few students like me had fallen sick on that day and she wanted to know what was the real reason. Only we knew what the suspense was..Haha!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.
