It is a darn shame that today, few have any idea who Nellie Bly was--as she was one of the most incredible ladies of her day--and a WONDERFUL lesson to us today--particularly our daughters. Jane 'Pink' Cochran was born in 1864 and women at the time had few options. You got married and worked as either a housewife or in a factory--and few other job opportunities existed. However, in this sexist man's world, Cochran had the temerity to be her own person. When she read an article in her local newspaper that said women were only good for being wives and nothing else, she responded by getting a job on the paper and proving that women were as capable as men. And, after a brief stint at this paper, she moved on to New York where she became a crusading reporter--an activist who wanted to correct the many societal ills of the day. And, to do this, she had an incredible bravery--one that you can't hep but admire. For example, she deliberately got herself instituted in a mental hospital to investigate it from the inside! There she saw and later reported on the barbarous treatment the women there were given. She also investigated an underground business selling babies! But the most famous was her trip around the world to prove that Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 Days" COULD be done--and she did it in only 72!! All in all, a nice story about an outstanding woman--one not to be missed, as she's quite the inspirational character!
