The Girl's Gotta Have It
boblipton16 December 2019
Mildred Moore is being married to Eddie Lyons -- poor girl! -- but she points out that it is missing. Her father points out that they didn't have it at his wedding to her mother, but she is adamant. So Eddie and Lee Moran go out on a long, accident-choked, funny quest for it, while the wedding party waits. The parson looks like he wants to ask about it, but decides that discretion is the better part of valor. Besides, it gives the audience something to wonder about while Lyons & Moran go on their long, gag-filled, funny search for whatever it is.

It's a comedy about the search for the Maguffin: the essential thing in every Hitchcock movie, the thing that everyone wants, and it never really matters what it is: it's reduced to a weak punchline, a comment on triviality, a groaner, and the more elaborate the quest is -- and the comics do make a long and funny quest of it -- and the more trivial it is, the better the movie. At least when it comes to comedy.
