Plot

The film is about Dr. Siddharth Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan) and his son Dr. Akash Sinha (Anil Kapoor). Both work in the same hospital founded by Siddharth. Siddharth wishes to run a state-of-the-art hospital, but his work and profession means he dedicates his time to his patients. Unknown to anyone except Siddharth, he is a heart patient himself, but Siddharth ignores his own condition as the hospital needs better equipment and staff to serve the people. Siddharth also does not like that Akash is not as dedicated to the mission as himself.

Soon enough Dr. Neha Mathur (Gracy Singh) walks into Akash's life. Neha is an anesthetist and is assigned to work with Akash on his Neurosurgery team. Akash initially believes that Neha is incompetent when she fails to bring the blood pressure of a patient under control during surgery. He lashes out at Neha, but she defends herself saying that she did everything she could, and the patient had a complicated history of hypertension and heart disease due to which reducing blood pressure any lower would have resulted in a cardiac arrest on the operating table.

Akash tells Neha that he is Siddharth's adopted son. Siddharth himself never married his entire life. Akash and Neha agree to work together to write Siddharth's new hospital's project report in a more investor friendly language. Akash and Neha fall in love. The project report is prepared, and the cost of the project is at Rs 12-15 Crores.

The arrival of Soniya Kapoor (Preity Zinta) changes everything between Neha and Akash. Soniya is a rich and arrogant schizophrenic woman who is used to having things her own way and it is not long before she wants Akash for herself. Soniya learns from Akash that his biggest dream is to bring the hospital project to life.

Soniya decides that since Akash is the man for her, she can latch on to him by literally 'buying' his love through financial agreement. Her father Gulshan Kapoor (Randhir Kapoor) contacts Siddharth for a meeting. Gulshan proposes that on Akash marrying Soniya, he will help finance the hospital project.

As fate would have it, Siddharth Sinha expires in his attempt to bring a child injured in an accident to his hospital. Siddharth's car was broken, and he saw a kid run over by a truck on an isolated street. He carried the kid all the way to the hospital but has a heart attack himself in the process. His last wish is for the hospital to be properly completed. Akash sets on to fulfill his father's dream. Going through Siddharth's letters, Akash learns that Siddharth once loved a woman and wanted to marry her. But her father put a condition that Siddharth would have to give up the child as a precondition. Siddharth gave up his own happiness to protect Akash.

Akash, now burdened with the increasing debts to purchase equipment for the hospital, cannot arrange for further funds. Akash then learns of Gulshan's offer to Siddharth, which he had refused saying that Akash is not for sale. Over a broken heart, Akash agrees to marry Soniya, in order to set up the hospital, and thus fulfilling his father's final wish. Neha understands this and agrees to break up with Akash but offers to continue working in the same hospital because she is a professional and dedicated person.

After the marriage, Soniya starts suspecting Akash is having an affair with Neha and starts annoying both of them. She cannot stand Neha still working at the hospital and keeps coming up with all kinds of reasons to get Neha out. Akash is so stressed at home that he starts sleeping at the hospital. Neha tenders her resignation to Akash. But then she assists Akash in a critical surgery and realizes that the hospital needs her.

Neha decides to marry a fellow doctor Sanjay, who had a crush on her from day one. Soniya is happy that Neha is finally getting settled. But then, Neha realizes that she will not be happy marrying Sanjay and calls off the wedding. Soniya feels that Akash had something to do with the marriage being called off. Soniya calls Neha's mother and threatens to hurt Neha if she does not let go of Akash. Neha's mother had a panic attack and falls down the stairs. She needs urgent surgery, but unfortunately all her medical records were with Akash. Soniya stalls every attempt by Neha to get in touch with Akash that night. Neha's mother passes away in the night and Akash only comes to know in the morning. Soniya had even instructed the guards not to let anyone into the house.

Akash decides to leave Soniya. While following Akash, Soniya is involved in a fatal accident and has serious damage to her brain. Now Akash has to operate on her. For a moment he is in a dilemma, because curing Soniya would mean facing her problems again. But he decides that he is a doctor, and a doctor should never discriminate patients, but his job is to simply save lives.

Akash operated Soniya and she is fully recovered. Soniya comes to know that she was operated by Akash, even when she created all kinds of problems for him. Wisdom dawns on Soniya and she asks for Akash's pardon and gives him divorce and walks out of his life, freeing him to marry and settle down with Neha.
