The Strokes delivers a great song. Roman Coppola gives it a little stroke of vintage charm.
OK. First of, as a has-been 6 years huge fan of the Strokes, this video is probably the most simple and pure example of the band debut as a rock quintet giving back the Ny rock'n'roll scene a new breath. The song itself, "Last Nite", is one of the great hit of their first album, "Is This It", released in a post-9/11 era.
Coppola gives the boys a chance to look absolutely natural, filming them in a kind of live show, on some 70's style T.V. set. So forget about those fast paces, pop music videos on MTV. "Last Nite" ain't like this. Lots of camera movements, back and forth. Like on Albert entire guitar solo, where the camera start from a full shot of the band, to the fingers of Albert playing his last chords of his solo. Really cool sequence!
So here, you'll find the usual Strokish presence of cigarettes and beer. Like Julian sipping a beer, while he gently bash on Nikolai and Nick(where we see a beer on his amplifier). Or, in the second shot of the clip, we can see a smoking cigarette hanging on Albert guitars strings. In terms of trashing, Jules seems to like pitching microphone foot in the air, and the (maybe?) accidental micro accident with Fab and Albert, trying to fix it while he plays. That's just before the 2-sec pause of the song, a usual mark on their other songs, like "Hard to Explain". Talking of this indeed awesome song, I think Coppola could've avoid using small clips from this video, like the shots of supernova exploding in space, and the electronic Tic-Tac-To game. But in all, I think it's a nice use of faded colors and lights, like the pink floor and light bulbs shaped in 3 big TV sets. I think the photography suits the band style and music rhythm.
Long live The Strokes!!!(Watch "Hard to Explain" and "Someday" video if you liked this one, even though they're really different)
