How I Play Golf, by Bobby Jones No. 8: 'The Brassie' (1931)
** 1/2 (out of 4)
Warner made several shorts with Bobby Jones explaining how to play golf like a pro and many of them would feature stories added just so the film could get some famous faces to show up. The story here has Loretta Young and Allan Lane running off to get married when her father puts a stop to it. Then, on a golf course they see Jones and the father begins asking questions, which allows Young and Lane to run off. From this point on its just Jones explaining the best way to hold the club to get the best results. All of these Jones' shorts are quite mixed as you never really know what you're going to get from the star. I've seen some of the shorts where he appears overly nervous and I've seen others where he seems like a pro in front of the camera. This one here has him appearing quite calm and especially in the scenes where he's meeting Young and Allan. As a big Loretta Young fan I'm willing to watch her in anything but I wish I could report that she was better used here. Fans will just have to be happy with the two-minutes that she's here and the fact that the screenplay doesn't really ask for too much from her. I think her fans will still want to check this out but the majority of those really interested are going to be those wanting to see Jones in action and perhaps pick up a few tips from the master.
