Summaries

  • Like many of his kind, big real-estate operator Jamison is land-poor due to depressed business conditions. One morning at the breakfast table, his wife tells him that she needs new evening gowns and hats, etc. Jamison, depressed by poor business conditions, angrily refuses her request, telling her he has no money. She calls his attention to the fact that he has $500 in the bank at home, and that will buy the articles she wants. Her husband seriously tells her that they have been living beyond their means and the money she speaks of he intends to set aside for a "windward anchor" so that in case of complete failure he will have something to fall back upon. He leaves for his office, and she goes to her room and falls upon the bed, sobbing. She sees Jamison go to a large real estate concern and try to sell a piece of land upon which he holds an option. If he is not able to sell the land he will lose the option. She goes to the safe and takes out the money, buys the articles she wishes, and has them sent to the house while she goes to a café. The husband, unable to sell the land, loses the option money and returns home. He learns that his wife has taken the money and bought the articles she desired. Angered beyond reason, he grabs a pistol and sets out in search of his wife. He finds her in the café, and in front of her friends he accuses her of virtually ruining him by her extravagance and this is the last she will see of him. He then hurriedly leaves. She angrily follows, but cannot find any trace of him, and in despair she goes to a high bridge, climbs upon the railing and throws herself forward, and comes down on the bedroom floor with a thump. She awakens to find her husband in the room. He tells her that he has just closed a big deal and that she can have all the gowns and pretty things she wants.—Moving Picture World synopsis
