Plot Summary |
Helen Wakefield, the country's wealthiest unmarried woman, finds difficulty securing as a husband one who cares for her alone, not for her wealth. Prior to a long trip, she had placed her country property in the hands of her agent, with instructions to sell. One day Jack Armston calls upon the agent with an offer to buy. Satisfactory arrangements are made and Jack sets out to look over his new property. Meanwhile, Helen and her maid have settled into the house when hears a mysterious movement in one of the rooms; investigating, she finds a man prowling around the room and covers him with a revolver until one of the servants arrives. Helen is surprised that such a nice-looking man should be a common thief and offers him the position of manager of her estate. The intruder, who happens to be Jack, is very much amused, but decides to carry on the deception. His mistress enjoys the company of her new manager and one day while they are shopping, she greets two of her old friends and Jack, in dismay, recognizes them as friends of his own. Helen invites the friend to call upon her. The night of the dinner arrives and the new manager, who has been installed as cook, prepares the dinner. During its preparation his face becomes black, but when he hears Helen telling of having a burglar for a manager and offering to show him to her friends, he decides to leave. One of the servants sees him making a getaway and nabs him. Jack is brought before the company and recognized by them. Explanations follow and the friends laughingly tell Helen that Jack would hardly be after her money as he has more than he knows what to do with himself. Jack then tells of having bought the place and hopes she'll share it with him. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis |
