Colonel Ephraim Hunter, Northern capitalist, and veteran of the 148th New York Volunteers and Major George Henry Randolph, Southern planter and veteran of the1st Virginia Infantry, visit the scenes of the Battle of Gettysburg, with their families, on the fiftieth anniversary of that event. The colonel's son and the major's daughter meet and mutual admiration follows. The two old men however show bitterness against the young peoples advances until an accident occurs which brings about a general reconciliation and the young couple are given away by their doting parents..
