Richard Strauss's "Don Quixote" was one of the works that Leonard Bernstein conducted when he made his public debut as a conductor on 14 November 1943.
The show was telecast while the musical "Man of La Mancha", which was inspired by "Don Quixote", was still playing on the Broadway stage. Earlier that year (1968), the London stage version had premiered.
