She believes personally and passionately in using the democratic process to create change, and she throws herself into working for presidential candidate Ron Henderson, an African American liberal leader. A heartfelt idealist, Melanie finds herself suddenly thrust into the cold, calculating world of a presidential convention where the future of the candidates, the country, and the soul of the nation are at stake.

Over the course of the one week convention, Melanie battles legislative friends and congressional foes, is thwarted by the press, and disappointed by her lover. For Melanie, a biracial beauty in love with a white reporter, the stakes keep going up as her chances for making her dreams come true go down. Will public politics and private betrayals destroy her dreams for good?
