Nothing less than perfect
swinebird21 November 2006
It was year 1973 when Kui Lee Cancer Foundation had change to get very big donation from the King of Music, Elvis Presley. Presley, NBC and Marty Passetta produced this most expensive TV special ever in that time with 2.5 million dollar budget. NBC sold it to more than 40 countries which could air it via satellite, and they made a fortune to Kui Lee foundation.

This is rehearsal concert for "the" TV special, Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii. This includes same songs, but Elvis makes it different way. They tested electronic and lights with this concert, and in same time they got footage to use if something would go wrong in live special (but nothing did).

Elvis' performance in this is perfect, but not that perfect than his performance in the main concert is.

The Forerunner!

The forerunner to the most historical concert ever performed by a single artist - "Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii Rehearsal Concert" was performed two days prior to the actual satellite telecast that was beamed to over 30 different countries on January 14th, 1973.

This concert was performed at 8:30pm on January 12th, 1973 at the Honolulu International Center Arena, and was performed as a dress-rehearsal in case anything went wrong with the transmission of the concert on the 14th.

A lot of fans prefer this actual show stating that Elvis is a lot more 'loose' and is in better vocal shape than the concert 2 days later. Elvis drops a few numbers from the official set-list but it certainly doesn't suffer for it. The show still has it's fair share of adrenalin and excitement through Elvis' dramatic arrangements of such classics as "You Gave Me A Mountain", "Steamroller Blues" and "An American Trilogy". Some fans claim that his performance of the latter song is the best version ever.

The Aloha Rehearsal concert is part of the deluxe 2-disc DVD set of "Aloha from Hawaii" and is a welcome addition of a concert that is very rarely viewed these days.

So, whether you watch the telecast show from the 14th or the rehearsal show from the 12th either way you won't really be disappointed.

Long Live 'THE KING'!

Rehearsal on drug

I never saw Elvis so disconnected on stage. Forgetting words on almost every song. His eyes were puffy, have problem connecting with the audience. I thought he might fall down the stage at one point. He did a better job on American trilogy then on the live concert, tough, but that's it. The live concert is a different story. Elvis is sharp on stage, his eyes are focus and smile a lot more. He seems confident. He didn't make any mistake on the live performance and that's why this show is so great. I surely appreciate the Tribute he made to Georges Harrison with is 'Something' or Jerry Lee Lewis with his 'Whole Lotta Shaking' Going On' or Sinatra with 'My way'.

I think Elvis was on same kind of drug on the rehearsal,,, I don't know but Definitely the worst concert of both shows.
