Randhir Kapoor's rare solo success.

Ponga Pandit review :

Randhir Kapoor's rare solo success in the '70s where he played a village simpleton once again after Rampur Ka Lakshman (1972); the titular role of Ponga Pandit suited him perfectly and I consider this to be his career best performance.

Neeta Mehta was cast opposite Daboo (Randhir's real life pet name in case you aren't aware) as the ultra glam sheher ki ladki who disowns her shuddh bramhachari gaon ka chorra husband (Daboo) of child marriage. Next, Daboo dear follows Neeta biwi to the city and becomes a big pop star. Naturally, Neeta falls for Daboo unaware that he is actually her husband.

The film is a complete mass entertainer with good songs, genuinely funny situations and two glam dolls- Neeta and Prema Narayan- in swim suits. Particularly, Neeta looked quite hot and sexy in the lead role. Surprisingly, Ranjeet was cast in a positive role though he played a rogue. Danny was impressive as Rocky, the pop star whose popularity fades after Daboo enters the scene.

Ponga Pandit inspired Govinda starrer Banarasi Babu (1998) which borrowed quite a few of its plot points. Later, Aditya Chopra made Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) with similar theme. But forget these copies, the original is the best. No doubt!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

Pop singer wackiness from India
marshall crist5 February 2003
This film concerns two adults in India who were joined in marriage by their parents at an early age. The woman has been raised Westernized and the man (Randhir Kapoor) was sent off to study religion. When he returns expecting his wife to be waiting for him, he realizes that they have little in common. With outside aid he develops an alter ego "Prem" who becomes a pop star and is highly sought after by groupies. It would be a love triangle with only two participants if not for the presence of another pop singer, Rocky (Danny Denzongpa) who has been spurned but still covets the woman's dowry.

PONGA PANDIT is a broad comedy made enjoyable primarily by the great performance by Randhir Kapoor. Seeing him transition from simple student to sophisticated ladies' man reminded me of Don Knotts being groomed as a Hugh Hefner clone in THE LOVE GOD? (Meanwhile, Prem's tailor/dance instructor seems patterned after James Brown.) Seeing this chubby Lothario breaking his female fans' hearts and shaking his groove thing on a hideously decorated stage is priceless. I doubt that anything else in Kapoor's body of work equals this role, but I'm going to keep looking.

Music album of this movie was so good , especially song " Ganga ghat ka paani piya hai ".

Randhir kapoor and kishore kumar combo was always Superb .

This movie was one of the superhit movie of Randhir kapoor.

Shahrukh khan's Rab ne banadi jodi movie's plot was mainly inspired from this movie.
