Quirky info-tainment turns into formula show
A 15 minute children's magazine featuring the latest trends. The title (and for that matter presenter An) attempts to make the old slang word 'bakvis' ('flapper' or 'teenybopper') popular again. As it has the word 'vis' (fish) in it, the set resembles a giant plush fish tank and each segment is bridged by animated fish. Originally co-presented by An Jordens and Ilse van Hoecke, with prerecorded items by Staf Coppens (mostly recycled from older shows). Each week a young guest presenter host his or her own segment about some sort of hobby, and Ilse and An would appear in a sketch related to the main subject. In these comical interludes usually one of these two tomboyish girls would be playing the part of the brother or father. Near the end a musical guest would appear for a short interview and a song.
The 2004 season presented many changes: Ilse and Staf are gone (and so are the comedic sketches) but An is joined by an audience of children. Apart from the hobby segments, there are new recurring features: two young trend-setters display their ideas and are judged by a clap-o-meter. The audience members wear fish fin hats to catch the bait from a fishing rod suspended above them in order to win a T-shirt. Then a couple of them compete in the two minute general knowledge "Bakvis Quiz". Finally there is the musical guest, but no time left for an interview. The whole show has become more streamlined, but this leaves no opportunity for surprises any more. Each episode follows the same strict pattern and there there is little variation between them. There also seems to be something subliminal going on involving the number two.
Series one: 8 out of 10
Series two: 5 out of 10
